DONUT ICE CREAM HOLY CRAP.

This is the menu for the Lake Street Creamery truck. Proprietors Beth and Tim make all their ice cream from the very finest ingredients, right there on the truck. They serve it in a waffle bowl, because it’s better for the planet if the dishware is edible. And they are really, really witty people. Lately they’ve been spending a lot of time at Wilshire and Hauser, but maybe you should just follow them on twitter so you can keep tabs on their whereabouts. If you get there first, save me a jelly donut. Thanks.

P.S. July is National Ice Cream month (not that I needed an excuse to write a post about ice cream).

Flying Lotus at the Echoplex

Last weekend was jam packed. San Diego for work Friday Morning. Flying Lotus show Friday night. Mexico Sat & Sun. So before I recount the Mexico trip I gotta fill you in on the Cosmogramma release show at the Echoplex (which was a super nice venue). Continue reading…

Truck Hunting

Ahh, the food truck. L.A.’s streets and parking lots are home to dozens of eateries-on-wheels, each one offering some kind of crazy fusion dish or a new twist on an old favorite (grilled cheese, anyone?). Unfortunately, they can be kind of elusive. If you want to catch one of these babies, you gotta follow them on twitter or facebook. And sometimes you just don’t want hundreds of status updates clogging your feed, right? Well thankfully there’s Roaming Hunger, a site that compiles all those feeds in one place so you can easily see which trucks are nearby. So whether it’s BBQ, Dumplings, or Breakfast food (awesome), you can track down your truck of choice and get your facehole stuffed.

FYI, NomNom Truck and CoolHaus are two of our personal faves (click on those links to read Curt’s old posts about them). Happy truck hunting, y’all!

Los Angeles, I’m Yours Presented by Kitsune Noir + Poketo

Remember when you were a freshman in high school and the seniors were soooo much cooler, had cars, better class schedules, and were generally everything your twitchy little freshman butt wasn’t? Well, consider Kitsune Noir as part of the class of 2010 with a serious case of senioritis, while Grizzly Bear Modern is still trying to remember its locker combination.

KN is a big inspiration for GBM – I even used some of KN’s CSS/HTML in building this blog. Bobby’s weekly Desktop Wallpaper Project has been providing my computers with wallpapers for years now. The supremely talented artists and designers that Bobby procures for this project never cease to amaze me. But I think the real feathers in Bobby’s hat are his collaborations, and most recently his co-curation of Los Angeles, I’m Yours, the local art and craft exhibition with Poketo at Space15Twenty in Hollywood. This eclectic mix of found objects and artistic creations was just amazing – and everything was for sale and most of the stuff was really reasonably priced. The show runs until May 15th, so if you’re in the area I highly suggest you check it out and say hi. Enough with the love fest – let’s see some pics yo!

Weekender

Wooo! What a weekend. We’re still recuperating. Friday night we went out to Arsenal to watch the Lakers game, and have a little farewell party for my colleague who’s moving to New York. Well, drinks and bar food turned into cigars at Buena Vista Cigar Club, which then led to gluttonous face-stuffing at Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles

Howdy, everyone! How was your weekend? It’s been pretty rainy in L.A. but we still managed to get out and have some fun.

Last night we finally used our Groupon for Taste on Melrose. If you don’t already have a Groupon account, get on that! You get an amazing coupon offer sent to your inbox every day– usually about 50% off at a local restaurant, spa, gym, etc. It’s the perfect way to try new places and things in your neighborhood. Taste serves what they call “upscale comfort food”, and it was pretty amazing. We started with their famous white truffle and mushroom mac n’ cheese, which certainly lived up to the hype. Creamy and truffley and scrumptious. We followed that with a kobe beef burger and a prosciutto, fig, and gorgonzola pizzetta (delicious). Oh and we were lucky enough to snatch up the kitchen’s last chocolate brioche bread pudding (are you drooling yet?)

This morning we made our way over to the Pasadena City College Flea Market and scored the brass giraffe and quail family. The quails have already made themselves at home on the bookshelf in our bedroom. Not sure where the giraffe’s gonna go but we’ll find a good home for him. Sandwich Saturday turned into Sandwich Sunday this weekend, when we stopped by Roma Italian Deli in Pasadena. The owner, Ross, is a little old Italian man who is happy to make you a sandwich as long as you don’t give him any instructions. “I’ve been here 55 years,” he said. “I make you sandwich.” So he did. Just meat and cheese, sliced impossibly thin, drizzled with olive oil and wrapped up in some heavenly Italian bread. Delicious. I also picked up some canned Italian tomatoes (Cento) so I can make this sauce again.

Pretty Cuppa

In college I managed a small coffee shop on campus. We did everything the old-fashioned way, none of those fully-automated machines like they have at *ahem* starbucks *cough*. This is a really beautiful video about the art of good espresso. The Mr. and I have been meaning to go down to Venice and check out Intelligentsia, but he’s not much of a coffee person so it’s hard to get him excited about it. Next time my espresso-addict mother comes to town, Intelligentsia will definitely be on our list.
