Their slogan is “Sandwich. Pie. Done.” So you know you’re in for something good. Simplethings (on 3rd and Sweetzer) opened back in November… we actually walked by the shop shortly before it opened and made a mental note to return, but kinda forgot about it until Saturday’s errands landed us in West Hollywood. Ryan Handel and Andy Paxson, along with executive chef Carrie Cusack, have taken two of our favorite things and presented them together in a way that’s so simple and perfect, we practically wept with joy. Sandwiches and Pie– what could be better?

Aaaaand we’re back! Well, sort of. The apartment hunt is taking up most of our spare time, and it will probably continue to be pretty quiet around here until we find the right place. Sometimes I hate that we’re so particular, but we know what we like and we want our new home to make us feel happy and comfortable. The right one is out there! I know it!
Last week Curt ended up in Denver for work, so I hopped on a plane to meet him and hang out with my family for the weekend. It was COLD, y’all. Cold and snowy and cold. So we spent 99.9% of our time indoors. Luckily Denver no shortage of fun places to hang out. Case in point: Denver Biscuit Co./Fat Sully’s Pizza. It’s two awesome eateries in one! Curt sampled their pizza before I got to town (no pics), but all 6 1/2 of us crammed into a booth on Saturday to chow down on some biscuits, bacon, and cheese grits. Yum.
Bonus: pool tables. They let us hang out and play free for over an hour. Turns out my brother-in-law is kind of amazing at pool. But I did make a pretty epic one-handed shot while toting Jonah on my hip. So there. West Virginia Style.
We’ve got more Denver snapshots coming down the pipeline, so stay tuned!

P.S. Unless you follow our Twitter feed, you might have missed my 10 Things List on Derek and Catharine’s design blog last week. Go check it out!
P.P.S. I walked by Robert Downey, Jr. in the hall of my office building yesterday. It was neat.

Why do all the stores/restaurants/bakeries in Portland have such cute/cool/clever names?! Anyone else notice that?? I love it. Anyway, we’re nearing the end of our Portland whirlwind, but we’ve still got a few more spots to share: A bright and cheerful deli servin’ up old school sammies, and a hip new restaurant on the Northeast end with delicious food and mad style. And now for a restaurant so brand-spankin’ new, it doesn’t even have a website yet! A-frame is the brainchild of Roy Choi, the man behind Kogi. It just opened in Culver City about two weeks ago, and we were intrigued by the idea of eating from a creative, globally-inspired menu at communal tables in a converted IHOP. So last weekend we grabbed our favorite newly-engaged friends and experienced the deliciousness that is A-frame. WOW. Amazing food, amazing drinks, amazing decor. Not to mention a dessert mix-up that resulted in 3 free desserts ending up at our table. Needless to say, that pretty much made us customers for life…

I don’t think I could ever leave LA just because I’d miss all the tacos too much. Today we’d like to present to you: Tacos Leo! Arguably the best tacos al pastor in Los Angeles. This humble stand slinging amazing $1 tacos can be found at the 76 gas station on the corner of La Brea Ave and Venice Blvd in Mid City LA. Again, I’ve been hankering to get down to this stand for a while ever since I read about it on Street Gourmet LA back in September – and Bill hasn’t led us astray yet! Continue reading…

Hey y’all! Hope you’re ready for some soul food. I’m out in North Carolina visiting family, so my southern drawl is starting to creep out and I’m feeling like it’s high time we shared Screen Door restaurant and Pine State Biscuits with you. These were two of the biggest highlights of our PDX trip– who knew Pacific Northwesterners could do Southern so well??

So this post is really more like The Ace: Part II. Both of these PDX hotspots are built right into the hotel! Clyde Common is apparently the place to be in downtown Portland on a Friday or Saturday night… but we didn’t feel like bein’ all fancy-pants, so we stopped in one lazy afternoon during happy hour for some munchies instead. Stumptown was my daily vice. Curt’s not a coffee drinker, and normally he’s not too fond of my espresso habit, but it was vacation so he graciously let me grab a latte every morning (thanks, honey!)

Eating breakfast out is one of those simple but rare pleasures. Especially when that breakfast is at a place like Mother’s! Man oh man it was delicious. Curt ordered one of the Specials– Lemon Poppy Seed Pancakes (above) will a tall glass of freshly squeezed OJ. Think you can handle more sexy food pics? Better grab a bib for your drool…

So I gotta get this post out before the flood of Portland posts breaks loose.
So when Bill from Street Gourmet LA declared Mexicali Taco & Co the best and only true carne asada gig in LA, I took note and knew I needed to hit up this nocturnal pop-up stand in the shadow of the Hwy 101/110 interchange.
I highly recommend reading Bill’s post about the state of carne asada in LA and his break down of all the scrumptious dishes served by Javier and Esdras. You’ll simultaneously learn something and get very hungry. You can check out our adventure after the jump. Continue reading…

Know what we tinga ’bout Tinga? We tinga it’s delicious! Fuhgettaboudit!
Ok, sorry, it’s been a long week and a long day and I’m a little delirious. I had to get that out of my system. Tinga really is amazing though. The upscale-ish taqueria opened on La Brea just a couple short months ago, but their menu is already creating quite a bit of hype. Tender slow-cooked meats are served in handmade tortillas alongside delicious complements like grilled corn salad and creamy horchata, all in a modern industrial space complete with Woolly Pockets!
