I’d love to track down this new Eames documentary. In the meantime, we’re hoping to get down to LACMA for the California Design exhibit featuring the Eames’ Pacific Palisades living room reconstructed. I had no idea the Eames’ had their offices in Venice, CA. That makes me like Venice even more.

You gotta love it when corporate marketers fund rad projects that would otherwise never see the light of day. This concept takes five of today’s “best” (which is up for debate) producers and pairs them with genre specific collaborators, challenging both sides to create something greater than the sum of the parts. The whole project is wrapped in a major marketing campaign for a new Hyundai coupe, which is well executed and integrated, but a little too parasitic for my taste.

From the project’s website:

“Follow DJ Premier, Mark Ronson, Skrillex, Pretty Lights and The Crystal Method as they remix, recreate and re-imagine five traditional styles of music. From the classical perfection of the Berklee Symphony Orchestra to the bayou jams of New Orleans jazz, our five distinctive DJs collaborate with some of today’s biggest musicians to discover how our musical past is influencing the future.”

I’m not really sure Jazz is much of a stretch for Mark Ronson, but there ya go. There’s not a lot of information on whether this will just be a bunch of YouTube shorts or if there will be a cinematic version or at the very least tracks released at some point. Either way be sure to dig around the Re:Generation website for some pretty cool little mini-docs and content that appears to be rolling in piecemeal.

These three videos make me kinda question what I’m doing with my life. Maybe we should drop everything and travel the world. And that’s exactly what STA Australia wants. The Australian Student Travel Agency guys funded this trio of dudes to make us all extremely jealous and it’s working soooooo well.

We saw this preview before Horrible Bosses and knew it needed to be shared. Horrible Bosses is hilarious BTW. Charlie Day rocks it. But back to Attack the Block. It’s from the same gang that produced some of GBM’s favorite movies: Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. Attack the Block is an action comedy about a tough South London street gang defending their block from an furry, neon-mouthed alien invasion. Plus the movie features an original score by Basement Jaxx.

Attack the Block has been doing the festival circuit and was released in the UK back in May. It’s going to get a limited release in the US on July 29.

Our Idiot Brother featuring the aforementioned Paul Rudd, Zooey Deschanel and Elizabeth Banks looks like it could be one of those late summer sleepers that ends up being really fun. Plus I really like all three of those actors on their own – Banks is hilarious on 30 Rock. It’s set to release on August 26, so I’m sure LA will get smeared with bus ads and billboards for this movie sometime soon.

word to the lil’ sis for the find

I love this handmade montage of the Star Wars trilogy directed and animated by Eric Power. This is actually a music video for singer songwriter Jeremy Messersmith, for his song Tatooine, which you can pay what you want for over on Bandcamp. The song’s kinda meh, but the video is a fun little trip down memory lane. Eric’s figures and cutting aren’t the most polished, but I like the hand hewn look. It makes it feel like a very intrepid and passionate elementary school kid put it together in his room.

While browsing through Eric’s work, I also found a great little short film titled Path of Blood – Demon at the Crossroads of Destiny which features a sword wielding traveler battling ninja and samurai foes. Again the entire piece is made with hand cut paper. Even though the story line and action are a little juvenile, the details and spaces between sequences can be pretty magical.

Cancer comedy!?! Yes. Joseph Gordon-Levitt has pretty good taste in scripts so this one should be pretty solid, and Seth Rogen is typically best served as a supporting character.

“50/50 (originally titled I’m With Cancer) is an autobiographical story based on the experiences of Will Reiser, a producer on HBO’s Da Ali G Show and VH1′s Best Week Ever. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Adam, a 27-year-old who is diagnosed with cancer, and his sometimes funny “struggle to beat the disease.” The film, funded with Summit Entertainment’s giant pile of Twilight money, co-stars Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard and Anjelica Huston. 50/50 won’t hit theaters until September 30th 2011, probably after a film festival run.” – Slash Film
