Following up with another dude that’s doing what he loves, surf photographer Mickey Smith. As part of a competition put on by Relentless Energy drink (never heard of it), filmmakers from around the world were challenged to explore, reveal, celebrate and define “No Half Measures” (the energy drink’s tag line).

Smith Explains “I wanted to create something that would give insight into what it takes to grind out a living as a water-based photographer in the surfing industry to provide a short, experimental glimpse into life lived in the shadow of what is, for me, an obsessive pursuit.”

Smith worked with Allan Wilson (director of photography) from the Astray Collective to produce one heck of a film.

Shinya Kimura does what he loves. Kimura’s got passion, drive, and commitment to his craft: engineering custom handmade motorcycles. I wish I could be as fulfilled with my work, let alone any area of my life, as Kimura is about his bikes. My only question for him would be, why move from Japan to Azusa, CA? I get the move to the USA, it’s closer to the salt flats and wide open spaces, but Azusa? Ewwww.

This beautiful film was directed by Henrik Hansen and shot on the Canon 5D & 7D. The editing and quick cuts are just perfect. Be sure to check out his clip reels on his website; there’s some really great stuff on there.

The teaser trailer for Casey Affleck’s documentary of Joaquin Phoenix came out today on Yahoo. Watch the trailer here. Regardless of whether this documentary proves that Joaquin truly has spiraled into madness or has prepared one of the greatest hoaxes of the modern era, I’m sure it will be a fascinating journey. The film is scheduled to be released on September 10th. The poster is also pretty sweet.

In case you didn’t know, Oscar nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix gave up acting in 2008 to pursue a career in hip-hop while simultaneously becoming one of the most eccentric and unpredictable people in hollywood.

Hot tip from Slim Magee. Check out this woderfully creative, and for some reason - poignant, film from Will Hoffman and Daniel Mercadante to accompany Radiolab’s Words episode. This film explores our visual association with words and their connection to our inner thoughts and emotions. BTW, Radiolab is legit. Check it out.

Alright, I know Curt just gave you three videos to watch, but have y’all seen this commercial? To be honest I’ve never been a huge fan of Bono or U2, but hey at least he’s using his celebrity to do some humanitarian good. And I really like that they took a simple, memorable concept and had fun with it. Pretty creative. You can watch the trailer for The Lazarus Effect, the documentary on HIV/Aids produced by Spike Jonze, here.

Jess and I just got back from seeing Inception. It. Was. Awesome! Director Christopher Nolan is on a real tear. Let’s hope the studios just keep giving him money and staying out of his way. Besides the amazing story (which he usually writes) Nolan’s films always have a rich and integral soundtrack that enhances the suspense. Check out the video above for a sampling of the film and some behind-the-scenes commentary about the music and sounds in the film.

This screen test featuring a 24 year-old Bruce Lee for an episode of the Green Hornet is fascinating on so many levels. Bruce’s natural charisma and strength are shockingly evident even while he’s holding still. Secondly, the juxtaposition of the sterile, jaded directions from off camera and Bruce’s sincerity is classic. Plus the content of the filler conversation is often very interesting.

It’s pretty amazing how with the advent of the HD Digital SLR there has been an explosion of amazing cinematography. This test video by British filmmaker James Bedford features the amazing coastline of Guincho, Portugal.

Rango is a new animated film about a chameleon that has trouble fitting in in the wild west. Looks like it could be pretty entertaining, if it’s well written – the director kinda struck out on the last two Pirates of the Caribbean movies. It’s not coming out until 2011 so I’m sure we’ll be hearing plenty more about this movie given that Johnny Depp provides the voice for the title character.
