Ugh, this watch is hot. It must be mine. And as a sub-$200 Timex this working man’s watch’s fancy older brother is well within my reach. Timex has been grinding it out in the lab for years to finally bring to their watches multiple complications normally only found in pricey Swiss made timepieces. This particular stunner has yet to hit the market, but it should be available at select retailers like Nordstrom in October. It will be mineeee.
We’ve been on a breakfast/brunch kick lately (mostly thanks to this), so we checked out BLD, a West Hollywood favorite, a couple weekends ago. BLD stands for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and while I’m told they do all three quite well, breakfast is definitely the star of the show. And, speaking of stars, apparently it’s a pretty good place to spot one (I’m 99% sure I saw Jena Malone on the way out). But enough about that. Let’s talk food. Curt got the bacon stuffed french and I got the eggs benedict. The food is rich and the portions are BIG, so make sure you have an appetite if you pay BLD a visit. Both were tasty, but our brunch bar had been set so high by Gjelina that BLD fell just a bit short. We’ll have to give lunch or dinner a try, just to see if it can truly live up to the hype. I’m looking forward to it!
Howdy! I hope your week’s off to a good start. If not, maybe this mix will help. I feel like this is an extra strong one. Sorry it’s been a little quiet round here. We’ve been building out a side project that isn’t ready to go public yet and the Mrs. has been under the weather. Peep the track list after the jump: Continue reading…
There have been a lot of really great albums released this year and SBTRKT’s debut album has been a personal fave and in heavy rotation since its June release. IMO it’s much more dancey and equally as rich and complex as the debut album fellow producer extrodinarie James Blake. The video above was directed by Tim Brown and produced by Johnny Knight. The video’s centerpiece is the wonderfully styled Roses Gabor shot simultaneously from all angles in a masterfully elegant concept and execution. I also really liked how SBTRKT’s mask theme carries into the video.
I can’t walk past an Anthropologie without going in. Fact of life. Moth to a flame and all that. Anyway, during one of our recent pit stops into the Santa Monica location, we spotted this book and had. to. have. The KitchenAid ice cream maker needs some love! But we didn’t buy it from Anthropologie. Cuz we’re cheap. We got it from Amazon for like half the price.
So. The ice cream. We made the Sweet Corn and Black Raspberry first. It was insane. Corn ice cream might sound kinda weird but it was amazing. Sweet and creamy, with a ribbon of sweet-tart raspberry sauce.
We’ve got plans for many, many more batches of ice cream. Check out some of the flavors on Jeni’s website. Anyone want to come share a pint?
Check this out. These guys over in Venice Beach got a big ol’ van, tricked it out, and started inviting local bands to play in it. Thus, Jam in the Van was born. They’ve already had 20-ish different bands rock out in the van, some of which are pretty well known in the LA music scene, all in under four months! But our pal Johnny and his band The Muddy Reds had the distinct honor of playing the very first set in the van. They killed it (as always), and I thought y’all might enjoy hearing a couple songs from their set.
Also, if you’re interested, The Muddy Reds are playing with a few other bands at the Bootleg on Friday night. The Bootleg is a rad little venue (we saw Broken Bells there!) and there’s no better way to end the week than by dancing to some loud, fast rock n’ roll.
Here’s a little nugget I forgot to share last weekend. We stopped by Thomas Keller’s mini-patisserie, the Bouchon Bakery, in Beverly Hills. I’ve got to say, we much prefer our local spot, Amandine, for all things Parisian (I honestly don’t know if you’ll find a better chocolate croissant anywhere). Still, Bouchon was a worthwhile stop, particularly for that lemon tart and the lovely packaging. They also make an absolutely velvety iced latte, if you like your sweets with a little caffeine. So, while it’s not necessarily worth a special trip, if you’re strolling down Rodeo Drive and feel a sudden craving for a nice chewy macaron, walk two blocks east to Canon and seek out the little bakery case, tucked behind the famed bistro. You’re sure to find a sweet that hits the spot.
I love me a good terrarium, so I’m diggin these beauties from Score + Solder. Matthew Cleland, the “traveling gypsy” behind S+S, hand solders these amazing hanging and tabletop capsules himself before planting and styling. Check out more geometric biospheres after the jump: Continue reading…
Let’s see if I can write this post without drooling. Gjelina blew our minds. We shared a lazy Saturday breakfast that was outrageously, insanely delicious. Scrumptious. Almost… utopian. Do you see those pancakes? They were like clouds. Melt-in-your-mouth lemon ricotta clouds topped with fresh raspberries and real maple syrup. I can’t even come up with the adjectives to describe this breakfast adequately so I’ll just let the pictures do the talking… Continue reading…
How is it already September!? I’m not ready to say goodbye to summer… not quite. We’re going to try desperately to hang on to that summer feeling this weekend. We’ve got plans for a lazy brunch on Abbot Kinney, followed by lots of beach time, maybe a nice little nap in the sun. Thankfully, here in L.A. the real summer weather happens between August and October, so maybe we’ll still be enjoying the warmth and sunshine while the rest of the country starts unpacking boots and sweaters. And maybe I still have time to have that crab boil, which is the only thing I didn’t get to on my list of summer plans. Hey, 9 out of 10 ain’t bad!
