Public Bikes

Oh, Public Bikes. I love them. And I want one. Specifically this one. That is all.

Camping Kid

That grizzly bear teepee was on my Etsy recommendations today and I instantly fell in love with it. I started browsing around Etsy and came up with this little inspiration board. We’re a couple years away from even thinking about having kids, but I love the idea of a camping-themed room for a little boy- wouldn’t it be fun? Granted, I’ve only been camping once in my life and frankly I was semi-miserable… but I just love the idea of camping, you know?

The Pursuit of (Cool) Trailer

OK. OK. I’m posting a bunch of videos. I know! But sometimes when it rains it pours yo. Back in October I had posted the trailer for INFULENCERS, a short film by R+I Creative about “how trends and creativity become contagious.” Now these Parisian expats residing in NYC are following up with another short documentary about the intangibles of cool. Looks like another stunner.

Paul Rudd Is An Idiot

Our Idiot Brother featuring the aforementioned Paul Rudd, Zooey Deschanel and Elizabeth Banks looks like it could be one of those late summer sleepers that ends up being really fun. Plus I really like all three of those actors on their own – Banks is hilarious on 30 Rock. It’s set to release on August 26, so I’m sure LA will get smeared with bus ads and billboards for this movie sometime soon.

PANDA BEAR “Surfer’s Hymn” from m ss ng p eces on Vimeo.

Say what you want about Panda Bear’s much anticipated Tomboy LP and whether AnCo is trying too hard, but this music video for Surfer’s Hymn is rad. I’ve never thought about mixing black light tricks with black and white film.

Pack Rack Heads & Tails

I’m loving these fun little jewelry/key racks by Steph Mantis over on Fab.com – which is a flash sale site like Gilt or Rue La La, but for cool modern housewares. Most of the stuff on Fab is still pretty pricey, but every few days there’s something cheap and fun like creatively mounted animal butts. Sale ends on these racks and necklaces in two days. Jump on it!

Thalia Surf Shop

So while Beans was getting his ass kicked by a sociopathic cat (see previous post), we were working on getting a tan at our favorite beach in Laguna. Yes we are horrible parents, but at least we’ll be able to bring our kids to the beach with us – dogs, not so much.

After we filled our UV quota for the day we headed back up to the car, but on our way we popped into Thalia Surf Shop. I’ve always known and seen Thalia– it’s on PCH about a mile south of Main Beach and three blocks up from Cress St., our favorite sliver of sand– but I’ve never stopped in until last weekend. Man! I’ve been missing out. The shop not only carries some really great classic surf brands and clothing collabs, but their Thalia fashion line is really awesome too! Besides stocking really well curated clothing, the store is impeccably styled – picture Beautiful Losers strewn among a retro beach cabin.

And to top it all off, the staff is a bunch of nice dudes. None of that “I’m too cool for you” crap you can get at a lot of shops. They just seem happy to share the stoke.

Cone of Shame (alternate title: FlowerDog)

Poor Beans. He just refuses to learn his lesson. He’s had a couple run-ins with Curt’s parents’ cat, Sushi, but yesterday he marched right into her territory–again–and got a claw to the face. A little backstory on Sushi: she’s a little crazy straight up psycho. She used to be a nice tame house cat, but a couple years ago she had a bad reaction to some flea medicine, didn’t sleep for almost a week, and had a near brush with death. She hasn’t been the same since. Now she hunts rodents in the back yard and dissects them with a scientist’s precision- for fun. Anyway, back to Beans. He’s got a small scratch in his eye, a swollen eyelid, and a very bruised ego. But $200 and one cone of shame later, he’s recovering just fine. Maybe now he’ll think twice about wandering into the laundry room…

Weekender

Happy (belated) Father’s Day to all the dads out there! We met up with Curt’s family in Long Beach today for a late lunch and some Aquarium action. Admission was half price after 5pm AND they have extended summer hours this weekend and next weekend. I hadn’t been in at least 6 years or so, and it was cool to see how the exhibits had changed. The sea otters are still the best! Continue reading…

Eric Power and His Paper

I love this handmade montage of the Star Wars trilogy directed and animated by Eric Power. This is actually a music video for singer songwriter Jeremy Messersmith, for his song Tatooine, which you can pay what you want for over on Bandcamp. The song’s kinda meh, but the video is a fun little trip down memory lane. Eric’s figures and cutting aren’t the most polished, but I like the hand hewn look. It makes it feel like a very intrepid and passionate elementary school kid put it together in his room.

Check out one of Eric’s paper ninja adventures after the jump: Continue reading…
