This post is a bit more solemn than the typical GBM fare, but Judy Gelles’ portraits of inner city 4th graders are pretty powerful, in content as well as visual presentation. Back in 2009, after volunteering to help inner city 4th graders with their reading skills, Judy took it upon herself to find out her more about her pupils’ lives. She asked her kids three simple questions:
Who do you live with?
What do you wish for?
What do you worry about?
And she got back some pretty heartbreaking responses. Count yourself blessed if, when answering these questions yourself, your dramas don’t even compare to these kids’ struggles. I know I do. See the rest of Judy’s series after the jump: Continue reading…
“In the 1980s an intrepid Australian pilot left behind a surfboard in the seaside village of Vanimo, Papua New Guinea.
Twenty years on, surfing is not only a pillar of village life but also a means to prestige. With no access to economic or educational advancement, let alone running water and power, village life is hermetic.
A spot on the Papua New Guinea national surfing team is the way to see the wider world; the only way.”
How was your Easter weekend? Here are a couple shots from our weekend festivities. We doubled up on brunch Saturday and Sunday. The Easter baskets were found in record time this year thanks to team work. We were total creepers and went to a dog park with no dog (well at least not one of our own), but we’re making progress on the dog front so stay tuned. As mentioned previously we also hit up the Santa Monica flea market at the SaMo Airport. It was kinda meh. When you get that close to the ocean the prices are gonna be pretty steep. Jess did score that cool necklace though. We’ve been threatening to make the pilgrimage to Brimfield, Mass. Oh jeez. It would be crazy.
Yep, that’s “Caffe” with two Fs. Our new friend Matt works there and he invited us in last week for the royal treatment. It was amazing. The food is sooooo good. Matt calls it “gourmet short-order,” which I think pretty much sums it up. It’s a casual place, but the food is a bit more upscale than you’d expect (mushroom crostini, filet mignon, fettucini carbonara). Take a look at these good eats… Continue reading…
Happy Easter from me, Curt, and our nephew Jonah. Doesn’t he make a cute bunny?
Do you all have fun plans for today? We’re having our friends Stephen and Katie over for brunch, then we plan on roaming around the Santa Monica flea market before church. Our church in Manhattan Beach is awesome–we meet every Sunday at 5pm, which is perfect for people who love sleep like we do! It’s a small community but it’s full of amazing, loving people. The Rock Church rocks!
Oh, by the way, we all found our Easter baskets in record time. So much candy!! Maybe enough to induce a week-long sugar coma. I’m really excited for that dark chocolate and sea salt bar…
Jess and I spent our formative years in the 90s and I imagine some of you guys did too. The other day we were thinking back on (and had a good laugh at) all the crap you “had” to have back in elementary and middle school. How ’bout you? Anything at your school you “had” to have in order to not be considered an alien?
Happy Friday! This is truly a Friday like no other. I’ve got a fresh mix to kick off the Easter weekend. Do you have any fun Easter plans or traditions? We do. My mom still hides Easter baskets for Jess, my sis, and me. Mind you, we’re all grown ass adults, but mom’s pretty maniacal in her basket camouflage. It still usually takes 20 minutes or so to find the basket hidden in the house I grew up in. STILL! You’d think after all these years it be easy. NOPE. She’s a sneaky mama and takes great pride in prodding her children to near meltdown as we, college educated adults, struggle to find a wicker basket filled with sugar and decades old plastic grass. Oh, the mind games she plays. So that’s what I have to look forward to this weekend. Plus we’re hitting up the SaMo flea market + brunch with friends Sunday morning before heading off to our usual Sunday service in the evening in Manhattan Beach. Last weekend we ventured out for Sunday brunch in our new neighborhood. We were craving a very specific breakfasty mix of savory and sweet. I’d driven by Huckleberry a couple times and it looked pretty promising, so off we went! Continue reading…
We need a vacation. Jess and I haven’t done any real non-work traveling since our honeymoon to Cancun, and even that was a little misaligned with the type of vacay I prefer. My ideal trip involves tropical beaches (the more remote the better), warm breezes, and a bunch of scuba diving. I’ve got to start planning. Fiji maybe, I dunno, either way I need to start a dedicated savings fund for it. You can check out a few more of my vacay photos after the jump: Continue reading…
