Return to GBM Home

Featured!

Our friends Derek and Catharine have a pretty sweet series going on their blog. Every Tuesday, they feature a blogger/designer/artist/creative type and give a list of 10 Things that person says he or she can’t live without. Curt’s 10 Things list is up today. Mine’s up next! Go say hi to Derek and Catharine, and read all the 10 Things posts here.

Thanks D+C!

GBM 2.0

Ohhhh snap! GBM got herself a facelift and she looks goooood. I still have a few loose ends here and there to tie up, but I think it turned out pretty slick given this is only my second ever try at web design. As we get more posts up in the “widescreen” format I think it will look really sweet. Plus webfonts are awesome. Get on that train if you haven’t already!

Thanks to The Fox Is Black, Saturdays NYC, and Design Inspiration for the inspiration!

PS – give me a shout if certain things on the site look blatantly broken to you

SO CUTE.

Have y’all seen this? Wow. Who knew porcupines could look so cute and cuddly?!

Kiri-origami Artist Taketori

55 year old office supply salesman Taketori is an origami master. This Japanese dude is knocking out amazingly realistic, creepy even, insects out of single pieces of paper and beer cans. My fingers already hurt.

Break Out Your Party Hats.

It’s our Birthday! Grizzly Bear Modern is one year old today!

It’s been an awesome year. Writing GBM has inspired all kinds of adventures (i.e. we need to do something fun this weekend so we can post about it). We’ve made lots of new internet friends, and we love reading your comments and emails! It still blows us away that people from all over the world are reading our posts, trying our recipes, and downloading our mixtapes. So thank you, readers, for sharing in our adventures! You make our day. You are delightful.

Now go have a cupcake in honor of our birthday. You deserve it. Cupcakes for everyone!

Love,

Curt & Jess

Saturdays NYC

Is it bad that I have a crush on a website? Saturdays NYC is an amazing surf boutique in downtown Manhattan “to suit a lifestyle occupied with surfing, living and working in New York City.” Granted, I’m a total poser. I haven’t touched a surfboard since I was a little kid, but the ocean still flows inside me. And now there’s an impeccably designed site pushing an incredible mix of stylish house brands and a tastefully curated mix of some of the best brands in the menswear game right now: Levis, Vans, Baxter, Gitman Brothers, Cosalots, Riviera Club, etc. Plus I think Saturdays NYC has one of the freshest logos around. GBM Volume Seventeen

First mixtape of the New Year!!! This ‘lil guy’s got an extra helping of synths and lo-fi distrotions and features two new cuts from Jamie xx, producer extrordinare and one third of GBM long-time fave The XX. I think this is going to be a great year for Mr xx and his wicked beat machines. Oh man! There are so many great albums out now or on the horizon. Winter is always the best time of year for indie music – that way we all marinate with the albums in the cold and are foaming at the mouth by summer when touring hits high gear. So stoked! Cop the tracklist after the jump: Continue reading…

Bull Cozy

Now that NYC is buried in snow, I bet the Wall Street’s Charging Bull wishes he had his custom purple and pink crochet cozy by Olek to keep him and is grapes warm. In case you missed the news about this amazing piece of street art delivered to the Big Apple on Christmas Eve, here’s a video staring Olek and her magic needles.

2010: Our Year in Food

Plenty of our blogger friends are offering up their 2010 “best of” lists. For most of them that means albums, movies, or significant events from the completed year. For us, it seemed fitting to recap with food. We tried lots of new restaurants (whether new to the world or just new to us). We cooked up new dishes in the kitchen and put the stand mixer to good use with various baking experiments. We even went on a couple of foodie vacations! So, if you’re ready for the fully food-tastic review, read on…

Daniaelle Simonsen

I’ve got another amazing artist to feature today. Daniaelle Simonsen is crazy talented with the needle and thread. Daniaelle creates magical yet minimalist works of art substituting ink and paper for thread and fabric while freaturing some pretty rad subjects. Bear battle! Dueling Brids! Sparring elk! C’mon. She just finished up school at Art Center in 2009 and lives in LA with her husband Trevor. Continue reading…
