Dieter Rams is the Man
German industrial designer Dieter Rams’ work stands the test of time and I can’t get enough of it. His clean, minimalistic creations are a pillar of 20th-century design and are still an inspiration for many today, most notably Jonathan Ive – head designer at Apple and the man that brought us the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad.
Plus Rams has a wonderfully concise and elegant mantra for good design (this dude is functionalism).
- Good design:
is innovative
makes a product useful
is aesthetic
makes a product understandable
is unobtrusive
is honest
is long-lasting
is thorough down to the last detail
is environmentally friendly
is as little design as possible
Plus in all the footage I’ve seen of him, he seems like a pretty awesome and down to earth guy (for a German) that really loves design.
