For Jen

Our dear friend Jennifer made a special request for my coconut cream pie recipe, so here it is! This pie was surprisingly easy to make and pretty darn delicious. I do have to say, though, that it’s even better after being refrigerated overnight. Enjoy!

Bruce Lee’s Screen Test

This screen test featuring a 24 year-old Bruce Lee for an episode of the Green Hornet is fascinating on so many levels. Bruce’s natural charisma and strength are shockingly evident even while he’s holding still. Secondly, the juxtaposition of the sterile, jaded directions from off camera and Bruce’s sincerity is classic. Plus the content of the filler conversation is often very interesting.

Get Excited, People.

Mad Men season 4 premieres on Sunday night. Don and Betty and Joan and Peggy are back!!!! I’m so excited about this season.

Can. Not. Wait.

P.S. did you know you can Mad Men yourself? Try it, it’s fun.

Pixelated Area Rugs. I like.

Not that we don’t love our cowhide… but I can’t get these rugs out of my head! I spotted that first one over on Junia‘s blog and I’m obsessed. And the other one? Anthropologie has it, and every time I go in there I have to go “visit” the rug. I spend a minute or two just staring at it, imagining how awesome it would look in our apartment. Maybe someday when we have a bigger place… and, you know, $1000 lying around.

Herschel Supply Co.

So I grew up with backpack envy. One of the byproducts of home schooling until high school is growing up with no real need for backpacks – or lunch boxes, the horror. I’ll let that sink in for a moment. Yes, home schooled, but we’ll leave that for another day. Anyway…these clean, casual bags by Herschel Supply Co. are quite the beez kneez. I wouldn’t mind bringin’ that “Zippo” duffle home with me today.

Riviera Club Fall/Winter 2010

I’m really diggin’ Riviera Club’s new fall/winter lookbook. I love the eastcost vibe channeled into this Santa Barbara based menswear label’s upcoming line. It’s quite a departure from the beachy vibe of their spring/summer offering. Check out a few more snaps featuring this rag-tag group hoping for snow after the jump: Continue reading…

Kimbra

Check out this sureal video by Australian recording artist Kimbra. I’m not quite sold on her music – its pretty much a mash-up of Imogen Heap, Quadron, and Bjork with a little Janelle Monáe sprinkled in. Regardless of whether she may or may not be some record company’s desperate attempt to ride the neo-soul renaissance we are in the midst of, her video is pretty captivating. Mad Men + little children = strangely interesting.

Fancy Fish

Curt and I tried to make sushi one time. Have you ever tried? It’s one of those things that takes insane amounts of effort and time, and in the end it’s kind of disappointing. It’s definitely one of those things that’s best left to the pros.

In any case, this platter is lovely, no? Made of sustainable bamboo. $80. here. I love those perfect little compartments for the sushi accoutrements! They have such a natural feel… kinda reminds me of this.

P.S. Have you visited the Grizzly Eats Chow Map lately? It’s got a couple of our fave sushi spots.

“People and Places” by Jasper James

I love this beautiful series of ephemeral double exposures featuring the bustling Beijing metropolis and silhouettes by photographer Jasper James.

Weekender

Hidey ho there. It was too freakin’ hot at the Bear Cave this past weekend, so we fled to the beach for relief. We spent Saturday catchin’ some rays, eating mexican at our fave joint in Laguna, and then driving around tormenting ourselves looking at beautiful beach cottages. Continue reading…
