Inspiration for Lying Lotus’s Album Cover

Here’s a great little video made by FlyLo and the gang featuring Leigh J. McCloskey, the painter and “visual philosopher” who created the artwork for Flying Lotus’s chart topping album Cosmogramma on Warp Records.

Illustrator Josh Evans

We got an email from artist Josh Evans last week showcasing some of his digital illustrations. Josh recently graduated from ArtCenter in Pasadena with honors – which automatically gets mad props in my book. He also “enjoys homemade ferments, pickles, sauerkraut, and playing the banjo and accordion” – all valid pursuits. Check out a few more pieces of this Angeleno’s work after the jump: Continue reading…

Rango

Rango is a new animated film about a chameleon that has trouble fitting in in the wild west. Looks like it could be pretty entertaining, if it’s well written – the director kinda struck out on the last two Pirates of the Caribbean movies. It’s not coming out until 2011 so I’m sure we’ll be hearing plenty more about this movie given that Johnny Depp provides the voice for the title character.

Comida de Baja: Wine Country

Well, we’re almost done recapping our Baja food adventure (if you missed the first few posts, they’re here, here, and here)… but we couldn’t leave out our tour of Baja’s wine country, a beautiful area nestled in Ensenada’s Valle de Guadalupe. Our Sunday afternoon adventure in wine country was the perfect complement to our fish taco breakfast (and fish taco lunch). There’s nothing like a little wine and cheese to bring up the class level after you’ve noshed on street food all day. Balance is the key, am I right?

Breakbot – Baby I’m Yours

Check out this psychedelic video by Breakbot built from over 2000 handmade watercolor images.

Blackberry

Doesn’t this just look so refreshing? Mint sprigs and fresh berries have a way of doing that.

And it’s called a Blackberry Smash! How fun is that?! I don’t know if that’s supposed to mean that it will actually get you smashed? Or if it’s just smashingly tasty. Only one way to find out…

Get the recipe over on Bless Her Heart (I can’t read that blog name without hearing my grandma’s deep southern drawl, haha)… found via Unruly Things.

GBM Volume Ten

Whoa…it’s been a while huh. Guess that’s what happens when your boss quits and leaves you picking up the slack. But that’s neither here nor there. MIXTAPE TIME! This one’s a very dancy, summery mix that should get you grooving into the 4th of July holiday. Check the tracklist after the jump: Continue reading…

Happy Summer!

Well, today was the first official day of summer. Hooray! But you wanna know what’s really sad? We still haven’t been to the beach this year. We walked up and down Santa Monica pier yesterday, but that doesn’t really count. I want a full-fledged beach day, with sand in my toes yummy snacks and a good book.

We’re going out to Catalina this weekend so I can finish up my scuba certification. I’m pretty excited! I spent all day Saturday scuba diving in a swimming pool, which felt kind of silly and weird but it was so fun! Breathing under water is really cool.

Hope you’re all making fun plans to get out and enjoy the lovely summer weather!

J. Crew in WSJ

I read a really great article in the Wall Street Journal Magazine about CEO Millard “Mickey” Drexler, the man turning J. Crew around. I love J. Crew’s aesthetic of both the men’s & women’s line and according to the article, Mickey has a lot to do with that. I was also really impressed with Tina Gaudoin’s writing style – which seamlessly blended the business stats and facts of J. Crew, the corporation, with a detailed look at the man behind the brand. Check it out!
