Flying Lotus at the Echoplex
Last weekend was jam packed. San Diego for work Friday Morning. Flying Lotus show Friday night. Mexico Sat & Sun. So before I recount the Mexico trip I gotta fill you in on the Cosmogramma release show at the Echoplex (which was a super nice venue).
Flying Lotus was playing back-to-back shows Friday & Saturday – DJ/Visual set Fri, live experimental jazz band Sat. Jess & I went to the Friday show to see FlyLo at the top of his game. A bunch of the Brainfeeder crew (FlyLo’s own label) tore the place up before the main event – Ras G blew out the sound system with his bass, it was crazy.
The show was everything I thought it would be. FlyLo has an awesome Cheshire Cat grin that you can see flash from behind his MacBook or while he’s dancing about stoking the crowd and making improvised sequences on his beat machines. Each FlyLo performance is unique since most of the performance is built on the fly (no pun intended) with his familiar “songs” and pieces dropped in, re-contextualized, and assembled in new interpretations.
The synced visuals were as wild and trippy as FlyLo’s genre bending electronic music.

I watched the show from right behind the sound booth – which is usually where the sound is best… plus there was a bar to lean on and hold drinks.
