Required Listening

Here are four artists that have seen heavy play in my headphones as of late. You need to be listening too!

Clockwise from top left:

1. Darwin Deez – Darwin Deez. This New York based hipster-to-the-max ensemble is a catchy little indie group with a baby Strokes sound. The album isn’t super adventurous and doesn’t stray far from the clippy guitar + vocals + electric drums equation, but hey, it’s still pretty fun and has a real gem in “Radar Detector.”

2. Erykah Badu – New Amerykah Part Two: Return Of The Ankh. This is a beautiful album, and should really be experienced as such – an album. There are great individual tracks, but to really enjoy this intensely personal and funky (in the purist sense) album you need to invest in the full 50 minutes. “20 Feet Tall” and “Love” are my personal favorites.

3. Local Natives – Gorilla Manor. This LA based quintet lays down wonderful harmonies and anthemic post-folk with squirreling guitars. They’re looking pretty set to have an awesome 2010. You can catch their first single “Airplanes” on GBM Volume 3.

4. Hot Chip – One Life Stand. This tasty treat has been around for a couple of months now, but mm mm mmmm. Tracks of this album have made multiple appearances in the GBM mixtape series. It’s dancey, catchy as hell, and has produced one of the weirdest/dumbest music videos I’ve ever seen.
