Spike Jonze’s “I’m Here”

I posted the trailer for this 35 minute short film by Spike Jonze in mid March and Jess and I finally got around to watching “I’m Here” on this lazy Sunday and cinematic weekend. This film is a poignantly beautiful love story between two robots living in contemporary Los Angeles, that celebrates how love and creativity make life so much more fulfilling. So go watch it now! It premiered at this year’s Sundance Festival and is now available to watch for free online, although there are a limited number of screenings allowed per day so check back if it doesn’t load. I don’t think there’s much chance of you not seeing it first try, given that this short has been available for a few weeks now – today’s count was around 1114 when I watched it this afternoon.

P.S. Don’t be caught off guard by the age check at the start of the site, there’s no robo-porn involved. The movie is backed by Absolute Vodka and I guess they don’t want “youth” that can’t do math to see this film.

“Exit Through the Gift Shop”

That’s the title of Infamous UK street artist Banksy‘s first feature-length documentary. We had the pleasure of seeing it yesterday at the Arclight in Hollywood. It follows the odd and somewhat accidental career of Thierry Guetter, a.k.a. Mr. Brainwash, and his encounters with the likes of Banksy and Shepard Fairey. It’s a really entertaining look at the culture of street art both here in the U.S. and abroad. The trailer barely scratches the surface of what the documentary is really about, but the tagline of “The World’s First Street Art Disaster Movie” sums it up pretty well. Definitely go see it if you get the chance.

Rappcats

I’m loving this visual history of hip-hop created by Eric Cunha who is currently studying at the School of Visual Arts, which coincidentally is where Derick Melander cut his teeth too.

Derick Melander

Artist/sculptor Derick Melander stacks secondhand clothing to build monolithic works of art that are not only amazing objects, but shed light on our rampant consumer culture and the waste each new fashion season inevitably brings. See more of Derick’s work after the cut.

Dicey Ankle Injuries

Fujiya & Miyagi ‘Ankle Injuries’ from Trim Editing on Vimeo.

This music video for Fujiya & Miyagi’s “Ankle Injuries” is absolutely amazing! This stop motion video is composed of “pixels” made of colored dice. Ugh, that must have been mind numbing work, but the final result is spectacular. Apparently this video is over a year old. I wonder how I never came across it before. As a side note, 2006′s Transparent Things by Fujiya & Miyagi is one of those solid albums I have always liked, but never think about it. Does that happen to you?

Hibernating Hubby

Curt’s not feeling too well, and I don’t wanna get whatever he’s got, so we’re gonna call it a night and get some rest. But Volume 6 of our GBM Mixtapes series is cookin’ and it should be ready for you to devour sometime tomorrow.

Happy Friday!

GrizzList #2: Saarinen Tulip Table

I’m (only slightly) ashamed to admit that I’ve been lusting over this coffee table for, like, ever. I can’t help it. It would look so sexy in our living room. Our current coffee table is nice but it’s pretty bulky, and we’re thinking the graceful oval shape and tulip base of this table would be the perfect complement to all the clean, straight lines in the space.
