We Are Scientists – Rules Don’t Stop

One of my all time favorite bands, We Are Scientists, is releasing their new album, Barbara, in June with “Rules Don’t Stop” as the first single. They’ve gone independent for this album, so they don’t have the Virgin/EMI backing for “big budget” videos like “After Hours” and “Chick Lit” from Brain Thrust Mastery. You really need to see these New Yorkers live! They have so much fun on stage and are constantly interacting and joking with the crowd between sets. As you can tell by the videos, they really don’t take themselves too seriously.

P.S. I just noticed that W.A.S. also appear to have a crush on bears see here and here – it was meant to be!

Urf Day!

…or as my calendar says, Tag der Erde (say it like the Swedish Chef – its fun!). So here’s my obligatory post. Well, I already had this in the pipeline – happy coincidence.

Japanese artist Koshi Kawachi developed this unique way to sprout veggies by re-purposing old graphic novels. His manga sprouts are on display at in an installation at the Matsuzakaya department store in Nagoya, Japan.

Takin’ It to Another Level…

There’s a growing trend in the electronic music scene of musicians and beat makers integrating visual installations into their performances. And I’m not talkin’ about hiring an FX roadie to push buttons from the sound booth – these guys are actually designing their own programs and are actively interacting with the systems while performing. Check out some of these amazing performances after the cut: Continue reading…

Well this gives “hat hair” a whole new meaning…

Yep, that’s a giant bonnet made out of braided hair. Part of a really cool collaboration between a hairdressing academy and Spanish design company CuldeSac. Amazing… but I wonder how much it weighs… and I wouldn’t want to sit behind this chick at a movie.

Out of curiosity: what’s the craziest and/or most regrettable thing you’ve ever done with your hair? I know I look back at some of my self-styled updo’s from high school dances and I die a little bit inside. All those curls and hairspray, eww.

You Lost It!?!

I sure don’t want to be the Apple employee who lost his iPhone 4G at a Redwood City, CA bar. As you can surmise, said iPhone 4G has now landed in the clutches of Gizmodo, the capital city of tech geek-dom.

Hilda’s Hem

Hilda Grahnat of Forever Is Today has an awesome apartment in Sweden filled with beautiful vintage furniture that she has thrifted or received as hand-me-downs from her parents and grandparents. It sure dosen’t hurt that Hilda also happens to be an awesome photog. Ugh, Scandinavians and their epic eye for design. I wish American interior design didn’t commonly include NASCAR commemorative plates and La-Z-Boys. Wah Wah Wahhhhh…Check out more pics I lifted from Hilda’s blog after the jump: Continue reading…

“Drunk Girls” Mayhem

Speaking of Spike Jonze. Here’s the new music video for “Drunk Girls” from LCD Soundsystem’s forthcoming album This Is Happening (it’s already “around” if you know where to look). The video was directed by Spike Jonze and was shot all in one take with menacing panda people terrorizing the band members – good times.

cheese n’ mac

I say that because there was definitely way more cheese than mac in this creamy, gooey, artery-clogging monstrosity.

I used this recipe and while we found it quite delicious, we admittedly have unreasonably high standards for mac n’ cheese (see here and here). I think using shells instead of elbows was a good choice (cuz they make little cheese pockets), and the panko crumbs definitely added a nice crunch, but we need to play around with the cheese varieties.

Have you ever made a fancy version of mac n’ cheese? What recipe did you use? Do tell.

Crafty Sunday

Couple months back we saw some vintage tennis rackets for sale at the Rose Bowl flea. We were ready to take them home with us until we got slapped with the price, $70 for the pair. That’s right 7-0. OUTRAGEOUS! It’s safe to say I nearly dropped them like they were on fire, but I didn’t cuz then I probably would have had to buy them. So I kept my eyes peeled for rackets during or usual thrift runs and within a month we scored a pair to $6 from the Goodwill in Santa Monica. $70, pishhhh. Long story short, it took us a couple months to figure out where we wanted to hang the rackets, but we always knew we wanted to try spray paint something blue and mount it on the walls and these beauties fit the bill. So for about $12 total, we’ve jazzed up our little entry to the bedroom. See more pictures after the jump:
