Uruguayan street artist and muralist Nicolás Sanchez aka Alfalfa was commissioned to bring some pizazz to the “El Viajero Hostel” near Punta del Este, Uruguay

I got an email today from painter Tyson Anthony Roberts showing off some of his newest works.

His work has been getting a little airier and drippy. For some reason this recent set of paintings remind me of Keith Haring’s work – it’s probably the thick bold lines. Continue reading…
This is such a cool concept! On her blog A Collection A Day, artist and illustrator Lisa Congdon photographs (or draws or paints) one collection every day of 2010. The amazing thing is that almost all of them are her own personal collections that exist in her home or studio.
Day 33 features Lisa’s collection of vintage flashcards… we have some that are really similar:
See more collections after the jump, and don’t forget to visit A Collection a Day. Thanks Nina for introducing me to Lisa’s work!

MMMM mmmm mmmm…. Yesterday for the Super Bowl festivities we made some pretty scrumptious food: Ina Garten’s sliders and Bakerella’s cake balls.
The sliders were divine. We used Hawaiian rolls for the buns and topped the miniature patties with shredded gruyère, sauteed onions, and some fresh arugula.
For the cake balls, we stuck with the classic chocolate/vanilla combo. They were so incredibly moist and decadent. And easy! If you haven’t already, definitely give these babies a try.

I’m loving this groovy series by photographer and filmmaker Joe Stevens. He documents vans in their native West Coast habitat. The artist states:
“Vans and the Places Where They Were documents surviving custom and conversion vans across the West and examines the dialogue which exists between a van’s design aesthetic and that of its surrounding environment. The project began in 1996 and currently consists of hundreds of images shot on 120 film.”
The Deep Sea collection is a collaborative danish Kolding School of Design project between textile designer Magnhild Disington and fashion designer Emma Jorn. These conceptual “sea creatures” are all handmade and really evoke the sensation and emotion of the crushing deep. You really need to click on the image to see the detail and creativity that has gone into each of these wonderfully unique specimens.

Designer Trash bags. I’m not sure how I feel about this. On one hand I’m amazed by the technical craft of these couture Louis Vuitton handbags. They are a coated canvas posing as plastic with orange pull strings that appear to be either high quality nylon or maybe even leather, probably the latter given LV’s heritage. This mimicry is truly amazing, but with a $1,960 price tag the joke stops for me. I’m not sure if the kind of person that can actually afford (or covets) these bags would be into it for Marc Jacobs’ wit or just because it’s the latest “it” item LV is peddling this year. I don’t mean to make generalities, but you know the type. Because, all in all, I really like this idea. It’s cheeky and fun, but I hope people will like it for the concept rather than because it’s made by LV.

Even though these two typefaces are nearly identical at a glance, I just feel like Helvetica has that ‘lil extra Swiss sexiness. Maybe it’s because Helvetica was made with grand intentions of a universal font by brooding and methodical modernists rather than some East Coast computer programmers. Maybe in 50 years people will be making documentaries about Arial.

PS that Helvetica documentary is AWESOME! Found on You Might Like This

Here at the Bear Cave (meaning our apartment… yeah, just roll with it), we love succulents. LOVE them. (See: My wedding bouquet. Actually, pretty much our whole wedding.)
So, I was kind of ridiculously excited to see this rad DIY-Vertical-Garden tutorial in Sunset Magazine. (Thanks Erin for the link!)
It actually seems like a fairly simple project. Check it out…
